How to Create a Client Photo Gallery That Gets Compliments

There's a difference between a photo gallery and a great photo gallery. Both contain the same images — but one makes clients send you emotional thank-you messages, and the other gets filed away in their Downloads folder.

The difference is in the details. And the good news is: most of those details are simple once you know what to look for.

Start with a Cover Image That Sets the Tone

The first image a client sees is the most important one. It determines whether they lean forward into the experience or scroll past it. Your cover image should:

For a wedding, this might be the first kiss in soft afternoon light. For a family portrait session, it might be the chaos and laughter of the whole group together. Choose the image that makes you feel the day — your client will feel it too.

Tell the Story in Order

The chronological sequence is the most powerful organisational tool you have. Humans are wired for narrative — beginning, middle, end. A gallery that follows the natural arc of the day feels satisfying in a way that a random selection never does.

Even for portrait sessions without a timeline, you can create narrative by moving from candid to formal, from individual to group, from detail to wide.

Use sections to create chapters

Break the gallery into named sections: "Getting Ready," "Ceremony," "Golden Hour," "Reception." These aren't just organisational tools — they give clients a sense of progress and help them navigate back to their favourite moments.

Be selective with what you include

Less is more. A gallery of 300 carefully curated images has more impact than 800 images that include every bracket and near-miss. Edit ruthlessly. The images you leave out are as important as the ones you include.

Lead with Your Best Work

Don't bury your strongest images. Within each section, lead with a show-stopping image. Clients click through galleries quickly at first — they decide within seconds whether they're invested. Hook them early.

A common mistake: photographers arrange images purely chronologically, which means the dramatic, beautifully lit couple portraits end up somewhere in the middle, sandwiched between group shots and reception candids. Curate within sections, not just between them.

Keep Branding Consistent

Your gallery is a brand touchpoint — for you and for everyone the client shares the link with. At minimum, your gallery should include:

When a client shares your gallery link with their parents, siblings, or engaged friends, every person who opens it sees your brand. That's a free marketing impression — only valuable if your branding is there.

Make Download Simple

The end of a gallery experience should be satisfying, not frustrating. Clients should be able to:

  1. Mark the photos they love as they browse
  2. Download exactly what they selected — not all 400 images, just their 30 favourites
  3. Do this on their phone without needing a laptop

If you're delivering all images for download, make sure the experience is mobile-friendly. A single button that starts a background download — not a 4 GB ZIP that appears in a browser download bar.

Add a Personal Touch

A short text block at the top of the gallery — even just two or three sentences — transforms the experience from transactional to personal. Something like:

"Sarah and James — thank you for trusting me to capture your day. I hope these images bring you straight back to every moment. Enjoy."

It takes 30 seconds to write and makes clients feel seen. It also means the first thing a client reads when they open your gallery is your voice — not a filename.

Test on Mobile Before You Send

60%+

of your clients will first open the gallery link on a smartphone. Before you send anything, open the link on your own phone and ask yourself:

Does the cover image look good on a small screen?
Can I browse photos easily with one thumb?
Is the text readable without zooming?
Can I tap to select a photo without mis-clicking?

If the experience feels clunky on mobile, your clients will feel it too.

The Payoff

A great photo gallery doesn't just deliver files — it delivers an experience that clients talk about. They show their parents. They share the link on Instagram. They come back to it on their anniversary. And when their engaged friend asks for a photographer recommendation, your name is the first one they mention.

That's the ROI of a great gallery. Not just satisfied clients — delighted ones.
